Songlines

Songlines is about listening to the song in our heart as we navigate the landscape of life. It has references to string theory’s beautiful idea that the most fundamental pieces of our existence are vibrating strings of sound, and it blends this idea with a tradition called “songlines,” historically used by Australian Aboriginal tribes.

Songlines are a method of using songs as maps. To find their way from one part of the Outback to another, tribes had a song about the landscape that described the major landmarks, and the sound of the song would change with the feel of the landscape. They would memorize these songs and use them to get from one place to another.

Perhaps this is similar to the way we find our way through our lives: every decision that we make is a new step in our journey, matching a new part in the song we’re singing. Sometimes our song seems familiar, like we’re remembering the notes we memorized long ago. And our song is made up of the most fundamental string-like particles of our existence.

Songlines was created in Adobe Photoshop, where scans of ink markings, graphs and scientific diagrams were combined with digital photos and original type.
